Student Counsellor

CCMF Alberta student counsellors are highly skilled individuals completing their Master's of Counselling programs. Student Counsellors work closely with a Registered Psychologist, who supervises them to ensure that clients can effectively seek healing, personal development, and wholeness.

Hello! I’m so grateful for the privilege to be able to work with you!

I am a Registered Psychologist and I ground my work as a therapist primarily in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, though I also draw from models such as Person Centred Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Solution Focused Therapy as well. I do not take a one-size-fits-all approach with my clients, and I do my best to ensure I am integrating client perspectives into my approach as much as possible. Over all, I work to ensure that I prioritize a strengths-based approach that highlights client agency and personal control over their lives.

I have a significant background in understanding and advocating for men’s issues, having spent much of my research in my master’s degree focused particularly on male victims of domestic abuse. I understand that men have unique ways of healing and expressing themselves, and I have worked hard to tailor my approach to those needs.

Hello, my name is James Patton, I am a Registered Provisional Psychologist.

It seems to me the world is in a time of profound change. Beyond economic and technological stress, on a personal level, concerns around mental health have all but grown these past few years. Men’s mental health in particular is becoming a new focus for many in my profession and is a central passion of mine. As I went through my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Mount Royal University I heard from many male peers who were struggling in their studies. In my 14 years of work at Distress Centre Calgary’s crisis and suicide lines, I spoke to many men going through the same issues as our clients here at CCMF Alberta.

Depression, anxiety, stress, relationship problems, divorce, custody battles, male domestic abuse, parental alienation, isolation, pressure to succeed, the full swath of problems defining the male experience.

I strive to provide service which is client-centred in design. This means your issues, values, beliefs, goals, and priorities will be emphasized in your counselling with me. When you aren’t being put in the driver’s seat you can expect me to offer modal solutions from the cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) school of psychotherapy. So much of our lives can be automatic, in the motions. If you want to become more conscious of your lived experience, and find ways to more productively become the person you want to be, please reach out for a session or consult! I adore speaking about my strategies and love answering any questions about what help can look like for you.

It’s difficult out there, let’s talk about it!

I am a student counsellor with over 10 years of experience as a mental health worker and case manager. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and exploratory — I ask questions to understand your experience fully before moving toward solutions together. I often integrate mindfulness meditation and goal planning, and am interested in a variety of evidence-based approaches such as CBT, REBT, Narrative Therapy, and IFS.

I have particular experience supporting clients under 35, neurodivergent individuals, and those navigating anxiety and depression. I’m passionate about creating space for men to share openly, challenge the pressure to stay silent, and find strength through connection and community.
